GardenDiary.NET - HOME
This site is about gardens and the right time to do things in them.
The idea behind it is to allow gardeners maintain better records of their gardens over time and to allow them to collate their experience in an organised fashion. It also allows that information to be shared amongst other gardeners so that people can benefit from the experience of others.

Late Planting this Year
March 17th, 2010 16:22
With the ground being so cold this year, it really is still too early to be planting anything. Still, as it has been dry, it has been very easy to get the ground prepared. So we are now at the stage here where the ground the hens were on last year is cleared and prepared for the early root veg which will be going in over the next couple of year.
That is what has been keeping us busy.
Preparing the Polytunnel
January 26th, 2010 08:55
This weekend was spent trying to get the polytunnel into some kind of order. In previous years, the tunnel has gone to pot in August because I simply can’t stay on top of it. So this year, I’ve decided to install raised beds in most of it in an attempt to stay on top of things. The plan is to run boxes down each side and leave the centre clear for seed trays in the spring and tomatoes in grow-bags once they are ready for planting on.
So I spent most of Saturday building boxes out of 9 x 1” treated timber and digging the soil up into them. There is still a touch of last year’s couch grass infestation in there so as usual I guess I failed to get absolutely every one of the roots out.
Anyway, it all looks a lot tidier than it ever has before. I’ll need to get some more wood next weekend and finish it off.
Time to get started
January 21st, 2010 07:58
It is all looking a bit glum out in the garden today and it is probably time to start sorting things out. We’ve been through three weeks or so of very hard frost and the ground is still a bit frozen a few inches down. Still, it was fine enough on Sunday to start getting a bit of ground cleared.
The focus for next weekend is to get some hens moved onto ground that needs clearing out. Our main hens have a run that is too big for them to be able to clear up so we’ll need to take off a few panels and restrict them a bit.
The other thing I have to do during the week is to use the new garden planning features on this site to set up my list of crops for this year. We have made this a lot easier this year as it is now possible to copy crops from people in the same country or climate zone. So, I’ll need to do this and go through my seeds to see if I have anything to order.
